In reference to your request for an application program interface (API) with the Office of Fair Trading’s (OFT) database, I have made the necessary enquiries with our Systems Support and Development team, who manage the OFT system and are responsible for the functionality, data content, quality control and privacy considerations around the information OFT retains. In this regard, I am also aware of the effects of the Right to Information Act 2009 and Information Privacy Act 2009, in relation to the information the OFT can disclose.
At the present time, I am informed OFT information technology systems are undergoing a fundamental rebuild from ‘old technology’ platforms to the new generation of the Department of Justice and Attorney-General’s databases. Due to the changes, the OFT system has been quarantined from any new applications, while the new system is under construction. While an API of the type you describe is in contemplation in the new environment, it is not viable to build the functionality within the short to medium term (next two years).
When the new system is in place, due consideration will be given to creating general public access to certain data sets derived from the database, but more likely initially in a ‘portal style’ on the OFT website for members of the public to search and extract data. The API style access will no doubt be developed in due course. However, I am unable to provide an accurate timeline.
