alitternation - Litter challenge

alitternation is a web application proposed as part of GovHack 2018. The app aims to make it easy to identify rubbish and decide on the method of disposal. This will help provide Australians both the knowledge and motivation to clean up their communities.

The app enables users to easily lookup litter or waste on their mobile device via several methods, such as barcode scanning, image recognition and product lookups to find out what they can do with the litter. The app would then show the user where the nearest bin or recycling centre is—taking the hassle out of doing the right thing.

To incentivise use of the app, the team proposed complementing the incoming Container Refund Scheme set to launch in Queensland by giving users the ability to collect 10c when they scan, track and collect eligible litter items.

alitternation won the Queensland Government’s 2018 GovHack Litter challenge.

The data

The project proposed the use of the following government datasets:

• Litter auditing data from South West Queensland Litter Prevention Pilot Project
• Waste Collection Points (Gold Coast)
• Resource Recovery Centre locations

The Benefits

The app would also enable all disposed items to be tracked as well as where and when the litter was found. The data collected from the app could help government learn where people tend to litter and whether certain products and brands are more frequently littered. This would help governments to make educated decisions to prevent future littering.
